Dominick brought in a caterpillar of the Monarch Butterfly. We checked out a book on the Monarch Butterfly which is also the state butterfly of Texas. We learned so much about this fascinating creature. They eat a particular plant called the milkweed. The milkweed plant is poisonous but the monarch caterpillar is immune to it. However once it eats the milkweed it remains a poisionous critter for it predators, when something chews on it, it releases the toxins and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. This spreads the word to those predators to beware of that butterfly- it does not taste good. It also participates in a great migratory journey, a very powerful insect it is!
